Guest Lecture: A Community-Engaged University: Problematizing the Town/Gown Divide

What would a university look like if it centered community-engagement? How could community-engagement partially address the challenges that universities are facing? Through a series of vignettes focused on community-engagement in higher education, the audience will be invited to imagine what the future of higher education could be.
Derek Miller received his PhD in historical anthropology from William & Mary in 2013. He has conducted archaeological work in Benin, Belize, Virginia, and throughout the Caribbean. In 2012, he moved to Richmond, VA and became involved in a new grassroots organization, RVA Archaeology, an organization focused on advocating for the protection and interpretation of archaeological resources in the city. After four years as a visiting lecturer of anthropology at the University of Richmond, he moved into the University’s Bonner Center for Civic Engagement where he provides supports for faculty as they incorporate community-engagement into their teaching and scholarship. He is currently the Associate Director of Community-Engaged Research, Scholarship, and Relationships.
